Scale, stains, taste & smell

From the meter to the faucet, your water leaves a trail.

White crust on the faucets, soap that won’t lather, a water heater that wears out early. Water problems rarely show up all at once. They show up a little at a time, everywhere.

Same-day visits

“There’s white crust on everything. Every faucet, every shower head.”

Calcium and magnesium drop out of the water whenever it heats or dries, and they stay where they land: fixtures, glassware, the bottom of the water heater, the heat exchanger in a tankless unit. How hard your water runs depends on where it comes from, so we test at your tap instead of going off a city average. The result decides the system and its size.

Before we start

“The water tastes off, and the kids won’t drink it.”

Taste and odor usually come from something specific, like chlorine, sediment, or minerals, and a softener alone won’t always fix it. The test points to the cause. From there the answer might be whole-home filtration, a drinking-water system under the kitchen sink, or both. If the smell only comes from the hot taps, the water heater is the usual suspect, and that’s a cheaper fix.

“We just replaced the water heater. I don’t want to do it again in six years.”

Scale settles in the bottom of a tank and coats tankless heat exchangers, and many manufacturers set hardness limits in their warranty terms. If a new heater is going in, that’s the right moment to price water conditioning next to it. We’ll put both numbers on the same quote.

How it works

We don’t sell a system
we haven’t tested for.

A water test and a look at your house separate the homes that need treatment from the ones that just need a straight answer.

  1. An expert picks up.

Describe what you’re seeing: scale, spots, dry skin, taste, smell, or a water heater that keeps failing. We’ll tell you what it points to and get a plumber out, same day when you need it.

  2. We test before we recommend.

A plumber tests your water on site and walks you through the results as they come in. They also check the water heater and find the install spot near where the main enters. The problem gets evidence before it gets a price.

  3. You get the options in writing.

Each option is matched to your results, whether that’s a softener, whole-home filtration, or a drinking-water system like reverse osmosis. Each one is sized and priced, with zero pressure to pick any of them. The number doesn’t move once you’ve signed it.

  4. Installed, plumbed, and checked.

A bypass valve so the system can be isolated, drain and power connections done to code, and outdoor spigots left untreated if you want them. Everything is checked for leaks before we leave.

NOT SURE WHERE YOUR WATER COMES FROM?

Check for a water bill. If your village or city sends one, you’re on municipal water. No bill and a pressure tank in the basement means a well. Tell us which and we’ll tell you what that usually means.

The questions
you might be asking

What does water conditioning cost?

It depends on your results, your household size, and whether you need filtration beyond softening, which is why we test before quoting.

Common signs include white scale on faucets and showerheads, spots on glassware, and soap that won’t lather or leaves film. Dry skin and dull hair after showering, water that tastes or smells off, and water heaters or appliances wearing out early can point the same way. Any one of these has other explanations. Two or more together are worth a water test.

It depends on the source. Many DuPage communities buy Lake Michigan water through the DuPage Water Commission. Towns farther west, and every private well, draw groundwater that typically runs harder. Published numbers for the same town routinely disagree, so we test at your tap and show you where your water stands.

A softener removes the calcium and magnesium behind scale. Whole-home filtration targets things like sediment, chlorine, and taste or odor at every tap. Reverse osmosis is a drinking-water system, usually under the kitchen sink, that cleans up the water you actually drink. Some homes need one, some need a combination. Your results tell you which.

Still not sure it’s the water?

Describe what you’re seeing and how old the house and water heater are. We’ll tell you what it points to before anyone gets in a truck.

Water conditioning doesn’t have to be paid at once.
