One slow sink is a clog. Water rising in the basement floor drain when the washer runs is the main line — everything in the house exits through that one pipe, and right now it can’t.
“There’s sewage coming up the basement floor drain.”
The floor drain is the lowest opening in the house, so the main line’s problem surfaces there first. Stop running water — every gallon used upstairs arrives downstairs. We clear the blockage at the cleanout and get the house draining before anything else gets discussed.

Before we start
“The toilet gurgles and the tub drains slow — all of a sudden.”
That’s the main line warning you before it fails outright. Air trapped behind a forming blockage pushes back through the nearest fixtures. Caught at this stage, it’s a clear-and-camera visit instead of a cleanup.
“This is the third backup this year.”
Clearing a line three times is diagnosing it zero times. Something keeps rebuilding that blockage — roots, grease, a sag, or a broken section — and the camera names it in twenty minutes. Then you fix the cause once, instead of renting the symptom.
How it works
A backup is two problems: the mess now and the reason it happened. We solve the first fast and put the second on a screen.
The first advice is free: stop running water, keep people and pets away from the backup, and tell us what's coming up where. A truck heads your way with the machines already loaded.
Through the cleanout with the right cable and cutter. Flow comes first — the diagnosis rides right behind it.
Roots, grease, a sag, or a break — you watch the screen with us. If it was a one-off clog, we say that too, and you're done.
Each option priced, from a jetting to a spot repair. The number doesn't move once you've signed it.
Call anyway. A blockage that “fixed itself” is still forming — the camera can catch it before the next one reaches the floor.
Our Standard
A flooded basement at midnight and a gurgling toilet on a Tuesday get the same straight answer and the same upfront price.
We name what blocked it
Clearing gets you tonight; the camera pass gets you the cause. You see the line yourself before deciding anything.
Camera inspection free with service
If it was a fluke, we’ll say so
Not every backup means a broken sewer. A one-time clog gets cleared and left alone — no scare footage, no maintenance contract you didn’t need.

The number doesn’t move
Quoted in writing before we start, and it holds once the ground is open.

If digging is needed, it’s marked first
Most blockages clear through the cleanout with no digging at all. When a repair is the fix, the spot is located from the surface — a marked opening, not a trench.

Because it’s the lowest opening in the house. When the main line can’t pass water, everything you send down — sinks, showers, laundry, toilets — looks for the first exit, and the floor drain wins. That’s also the diagnostic gift: floor drain backups almost always mean the main, not a fixture. Stop running water and the rising stops with it.
Treat the house like the drain is a wall: anything that goes down a drain right now comes up in the basement. Skip laundry, dishes, showers, and flush only if you absolutely must — sparingly. If the backup is actively rising with no water running, water may be coming from the municipal side, and that’s worth telling us when you call.
In Chicagoland, the usual suspects in order: roots working through joints in older clay lines, grease building until the line narrows shut, a sag holding water and debris, wipes and ‘flushables’ snagging on any of the above, and — less often — a collapsed or offset section. The clearing gets you flowing; the camera tells you which suspect it was.
The line from your house to the municipal main is typically yours; the main itself is the city’s. One useful clue: if neighbors are backing up at the same time, or the backup rises with no water running in your house, call the village public works before paying anyone — a main problem is their job, free. If it’s only your house, it’s your lateral. We’ll tell you which story your symptoms fit.
Gloves, ventilation, and bleach-water on anything the backup touched — porous stuff that soaked (cardboard, carpet pad) is usually not worth saving. Keep kids and pets out until surfaces are disinfected and dry. For more than a puddle, photograph everything first for insurance, and consider a water damage crew; we can tell you when it’s crossed that line.
Standard policies usually exclude sewer backup unless you carry a specific backup rider — many Chicagoland homeowners have one without knowing, and it’s cheap to add if you don’t. The pipe repair itself is typically on you either way. We’re plumbers, not adjusters, so call your carrier — and we’ll hand you the camera footage and written cause they’ll ask for.
Tell us which fixtures are acting up and in what order. We’ll tell you which line it is and what to do right now — before anyone gets in a truck.
