Cracks, offsets & broken joints

“Broken” covers a lot of ground.
The camera narrows it down.

A hairline crack, an offset joint, and a collapsed section are all “a broken sewer” — at very different prices. What you actually have matters more than what it’s called.

Second opinions welcome

“My drain guy hit something solid and stopped.”

When the cable stops dead at the same distance every time, it’s hitting a defect — a dropped section, a hard offset, or a collapse. We camera to that exact spot, look at what stopped it, and locate it from above. Then the problem has a size.

Before we start

“The report says “offset joint at 42 feet.” Is that bad?”

It means two pipe sections have shifted out of line — common as Chicagoland clay ages and soil moves. Severity is everything: a minor offset passes flow for years; a major one snags paper until it blocks. We’ll tell you which yours is, and whether fixing beats monitoring.

“There’s a soggy, sunken strip in my lawn.”

A leaking sewer washes soil into itself, and the ground above settles — that stripe can be tracing your line. We camera it, confirm whether the pipe is losing water, and mark where. Sometimes it’s the sewer; sometimes it’s a downspout drain. The camera says which.

How it works

Repairs sized by footage,
not by fear.

The camera finds it, the locator marks it, and the quote covers exactly that — nothing padded, nothing guessed.

  1. An expert picks up.

Describe the symptom or read us the report. We'll tell you whether it sounds like a defect, a maintenance issue, or nothing — and what we'd check first.

  2. We camera to the defect and mark it.

You watch the screen with us. The break gets a distance, a depth, and paint on the grass above it — that's what keeps the repair small.

  3. You get the options in writing.

Fix it now, line it, or monitor it on a schedule — each with a price and an honest read on the risk of waiting. The number doesn't move once you've signed it.

  4. We repair it and prove it.

The section is fixed, the ground goes back, and a final camera pass shows the line running clean. You keep the before-and-after footage.

Straight answers

The questions
you might be asking

What does a sewer repair actually cost?

Depends on what failed, how deep it sits, and what’s above it — which is why we camera and locate before quoting. The honest ranges:

Camera inspection & locate (free with service)

$XXX – $XXX

Spot repair, one section

$XXX – $XXX

Offset or joint repair

$XXX – $XXX

Sectional lining, per foot

$XXX – $XXX

Time and ground movement, mostly. Chicagoland’s clay soil swells and shrinks with the seasons, and it’s been doing that to your pipe since the day it was laid. Joints shift, clay pipe cracks, cast iron rusts from the inside, roots pry at every opening they find, and the occasional truck over a shallow line speeds all of it up. Most breaks are the pipe’s age showing, not something you did.

Often, yes. A crack or root-damaged section in pipe that still holds its shape can take a cured-in-place liner — installed through the cleanout, no excavation. What lining can’t fix: collapsed pipe, major offsets, and grade problems, which need the section opened and reset. The camera footage makes this call, and we show you exactly why yours lands where it does.

Depends on what’s passing through it and how well. A stable hairline crack that isn’t leaking soil or catching debris can be monitored for years. An offset that snags paper, a crack washing soil in, or any defect pairing with backups is on a clock — and soil washing in is the one that turns into a sinkhole story. The footage tells us which clock yours is on, and we’ll be straight about it.

A cable that stops hard at the same spot every time has found something solid — a collapsed section, a dropped pipe, a hard offset, sometimes years of scale in cast iron. Forcing it risks a stuck cable, which turns one problem into two. A camera to that distance answers it in minutes, and then the conversation is about a fix instead of a mystery.

The locate is what protects it. Because the defect is marked from the surface, we open the size of the repair — not a trench to go looking. Sod gets cut and set aside, spoil stays on boards, and the quote includes putting the spot back together. If the repair sits under concrete or a planting bed you care about, that’s priced and discussed before, not after.

The repaired section outlives the rest of the line — new PVC and cured liners are rated in decades. What we’re honest about: fixing one joint doesn’t renew the 60-year-old pipe on either side of it. That’s why the full-line camera pass matters, and why the report tells you what shape the rest is in. Fix what’s broken now; know what’s next.

Still not sure how bad it is?

Read us the camera report, or describe what keeps happening. We’ll tell you what it probably is and what fixing it involves — before anyone gets in a truck.

A sewer repair doesn’t have to be paid at once.
