Power outages, storms & one bad memory

The pump can't save you
if the outlet is dead.

The same storm that pushes water at your foundation is the one that takes the power out. A primary pump without a backup is a plan that works right up until the night it matters.

Before the next storm

“We flooded during the outage last summer. Never again.”

That’s how most backup systems get bought — one ruined carpet at a time. Sized right, a battery backup runs through hours of heavy inflow, and the system tells you when it’s been called into action. You’ll never again wonder what happened while you were away.

Before we start

“I have a backup, but no idea if it still works.”

Batteries age quietly — three to five years is a typical life, less in a damp pit. We test the pump under load, check the battery’s real capacity, and replace only what’s spent. A backup you haven’t tested is a hope, not a system.

“Battery or water-powered — which backup is right?”

Depends on your house. Water-powered backups run as long as city pressure exists — no battery to die — but they need solid municipal pressure and use water to move water. Batteries work anywhere and pump harder. We’ll look at your pit, your pressure, and your outage pattern, and make the case for each.

How it works

The first test
shouldn't be the first outage.

Every install ends with the cord pulled and the backup doing the whole job while you watch.

  1. An expert picks up.

Tell us what's in the pit now, how often you lose power, and what's at stake downstairs. That's most of the sizing conversation already.

  2. We assess the whole setup.

Primary pump health, pit size, inflow rate, discharge path, and your electrical situation — the backup has to fit the system it's joining.

  3. You get the options in writing.

Battery systems by runtime, water-powered where pressure supports it, and alarm or monitoring add-ons — each priced. The number doesn't move once you've signed it.

  4. We test it by pulling the plug.

Primary off, pit filling, backup carrying the load — you watch it happen while we're standing there, so the first real outage isn't the first test.

Not sure what you have down there?

Send a photo of your pit. We’ll tell you what’s installed, what’s missing, and whether it’s storm-ready.

DIAGNOSIS

We size the backup to your pit

Inflow rate, pit size, and outage history decide the pump and the battery — not whatever’s on sale. You get the math.

STRAIGHT TALK

Sometimes the battery is the whole fix

If your backup pump is sound and only the battery is spent, that’s what you’ll pay for. We’d rather replace a battery than sell a system.

Straight answers

The questions
you might be asking

What does a battery backup system cost?

Depends on the runtime you need and what’s already in the pit — which is why the assessment comes first. The honest ranges:

Backup checkup & battery load test

$XXX – $XXX

Battery replacement

$XXX – $XXX

Battery backup system, installed

$XXX – $XXX

Water-powered backup, installed

$XXX – $XXX

Honest answer: it depends on how hard it’s working. A quality setup might run a day or more of intermittent cycling, or hours of continuous pumping in a serious storm — the difference is your inflow. That’s why we size from your pit’s fill rate instead of the box’s marketing, and why the install test measures your actual runtime rather than quoting the brochure’s.

Water-powered wins on endurance — it runs as long as the city keeps pressure up, which makes it compelling for homes that lose power for days. It needs strong municipal pressure, uses roughly a gallon of city water per gallon or two pumped, and isn’t an option on private wells. Battery systems fit anywhere and move more water per minute. Plenty of flood-scarred homeowners end up with both — primary, battery, and water-powered as the last line.

Yes — that’s the whole design. The backup has its own float switch set slightly higher than the primary’s. If the primary can’t keep up or has no power, the water reaches the backup’s float and it takes over on its own, awake or away. The alarm tells you it happened, which matters: a backup running means your primary needs attention.

A new primary solves mechanical failure, not the power going out — and outages cause a large share of basement floods for exactly that reason. The question is what a flood would cost you: finished space, storage, a home office downstairs says yes; an unfinished basement that’s seen water before and shrugged might not justify it. We’ll give you the straight recommendation either way.

Every three to five years, even if it’s never run — backup batteries age on standby, and a damp pit environment shortens the schedule. The system’s charger will flag some failures, but the only test that counts is carrying a real load, which is what our checkup does. Put it on the same calendar as your smoke detector batteries and it stops being a surprise.

Yes — this is where backups have gotten meaningfully better. Current systems offer Wi-Fi monitoring that pushes alerts to your phone: backup activated, battery low, pump failure. For a house with a finished basement or owners who travel, it’s the difference between finding out during the storm and finding out at the carpet. We’ll show you the options when we quote the system.

Still not sure you need one?

Tell us your outage history and what’s downstairs. We’ll tell you what we’d do in your house — before anyone gets in a truck.
